ŠEFKO SULEJMANOVIĆ, PhD

Born in Zvornik in 1960. Completed Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa in Sarajevo, and undergraduate studies in Oriental Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Priština. He was granted a Master’s degree in Social Sciences in the field of history by the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Tuzla in 2013, where he also defended his doctoral dissertation entitled Sacral Buildings of Islamic Architecture in the Zvornik District and Their Cultural and Historical Significance, in 2017.

At present, he holds the position of director of the Institute for Social and Religious Studies in Tuzla and the title of research associate. As an academic, he primarily focuses on the sacral culture of Bosniaks. Among others, he has published three school textbooks, two as a coauthor and one independently, the monograph Tuzlanski džemati (Tuzla, 2016), a joint paper “Muftiluk tuzlanski” (pp. 380-527) in Islamska zajednica u Bosni i Hercegovini 1882-2012(monograph, Sarajevo, 2013), the books Prilozi iz kulture bosanskih muslimana (Tuzla, 2021) and Zvornik u osmansko doba (Sarajevo, 2021) and over fifty academic and professional papers in journals and proceedings.

In 2002, he was appointed a member of the federal expert team for reviewing primary and secondary school textbooks and, in 2016, an external expert associate of the Institute for the Protection and Use of the Cultural-Historical and Natural Heritage of Tuzla Canton. He has organized a number of academic and professional conferences, educational seminars and cultural events where he was also an active participant. He has been a reviewer and editor of a large number of books and other publications. He was awarded recognition for his outstanding contribution to the activity of Behram-beg Madrasa in Tuzla in 2014.
