    Faith, in the sense of religion, is the basic inspiration of the Islamic culture of classical times, and in those times Islamic culture accompanied the Islamic religion wherever it moved. In the abundance of forms which expressed and conveyed this original relationship, the city occupied a representative position.

  • THE CITY - GENESIS OF URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL FORM

    Historical cores of cities were formed, primarily due to favorable or specific geographical position, as nodal places, where trade routes and natural resources intersect. Historical, stylistic features are subordinate forces in the shaping of architecture and space.

  • THREE CENTURIES OF THE MOSQUE IN HATINAC - BIHAĆ

    The mosque in Hatinac is doubtlessly one of the oldest in the area of present Majlis of the Islamic Community Bihać. On the inscription above the entrance door, the 1126 Hijri, or 1714 A.D. year is inscribed, which means that eight years ago it turned three centuries of existence.

  • SULTAN MOSQUES IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

    Mosques which were commissioned by sultans have particular significance in the tradition of Ottoman architecture and are called “selatin” or “sultan mosques”. Some of them were built in the capital of the Empire and were symbols of the economic power, as well as of the sultan's spiritual and secular authority.

    Towns in our country were founded upon the arrival of Ottomans, typically at the places of the already existent medieval settlements. Since the conception of these old towns has to a great extent persisted to this day, at least in the historically preserved cores, we will recognize the principle which was followed when they were built.

  • NOVI PAZAR – A CITY OF WAQFS AND A CONFLUENCE OF CULTURES

    Novi Pazar is one of the cities in the Balkans which, besides Sarajevo, is the most important cultural, religious and national center of Muslims in the Balkans. In Novi Pazar, one can find the famous cultural-historical monuments, mosques, schools and universities.

  • SULTAN SELIM’S MOSQUE

    Čaršija Mosque in Stolac, i.e. the Sultan Selim Mosque, is one of the oldest mosques in Herzegovina. Together with the building ensemble Stolac Čaršija (marketplace) it was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2003.

  • MOSTAR PANORAMA

    Mostar, built of stone, so solid, yet seems so fragile and transcendental in the afternoon heat - like an impressionist painting of an enchanted city. The key structures of the Old Town that shaped the formation of the core are the Old Bridge with towers and the city walls.

    Bosniaks used to be one of the peoples who enjoyed full recognition in all fields of political, intellectual and artistic activity within the Ottoman Empire.

  • COURTYARD, WOODEN DOORS AND INTERIOR OF THE TEKIJSKA MOSQUE

    In 2006, the architectural ensemble – the Tekke (Muhamed Mehmed-čauš) Mosque in Konjic was designated as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The national monument is composed of the mosque and the mosque courtyard.

  • STONE BRIDGES IN SARAJEVO FROM THE OTTOMAN PERIOD

    Sarajevo had most bridges out of all the cities in the Ottoman Bosnia. Besides those on the Miljacka River, bridges were built in a broader area of the city, on the rivers Željeznica and Bosnia.

    Havale Ahmed-bey Silahdar Mosque, better known as Lejlek Mosque, was named after its builder Ahmed-bey Silahdar.

    From the transcript of the vakufnama (deed of endowment) of Mawlana Muslihuddin Abdulgani, which is still kept in the Archives of the Central Directorate of Waqfs in Ankara, we learn that he commissioned one of the mosques in Novi Pazar.

    By lined-up proportions and builders’ skill, the Husein-pasha Mosque in Pljevlje is one of the most significant buildings from the period of Ottoman administration, while by the wealth of interior and exterior decoration it is one of the richest mosques in this region.

    Musa-pasha Mosque is worth seeing. This is a mosque whose doors and walls, mihrab and minbar and the archway over the gates are quite beautifully executed artistically, and all of it is made of marble, green like emerald.

    Exhibition “Mostar harems at the time of devastation 1878–1992ˮ authored by Ahmet Kurt and opened in the Center for Culture on 4 October 2022, reminded the public at large of a long process of devastation and disappearance of numerous cemeteries in Mostar.

  • FETHIJA MOSQUE IN BIHAĆ

    Fethija Mosque is situated in the main city square in Bihać. It was built of the carved stone bihacit, same as many other buildings in Bosanska Krajina. Her base consists of a 22m long and 11.50 m wide rectangle and it is 10.50 m high.
